Hearing History: Holocaust Survivor Shares Story with 7th Graders
7th Grade students had an extraordinary opportunity to virtually meet Holocaust survivor Ruth Weiner, connecting their learning to the novel Refugee by Alan Gratz, which they have read in Geography class this year. Her story of fleeing her home on the Kindertransport to England and eventually finding safety in the United States brought classroom content to life in a deeply personal and meaningful way.
Students Allison Gorges, Rishi Srikanth, Veronica Golec, and Jax Rodrigues served as interviewers, asking questions selected from submissions across the grade. This interactive experience allowed students to engage directly with Ruth and gain a deeper understanding of her experiences and the historical context.
Ruth emphasized the importance of reserving the term “Holocaust” for this tragic period in which over six million Jewish people were murdered and shared a message of hope, encouraging students to stand up against hate and be “the light in the world.”
We are grateful to Ruth for sharing her story and inspiring students to reflect, learn, and act with compassion.
